What Is and What Should Never Be
The Sad Reality of Cancelled Games
by Sarah
It could happen to any of us. You wait for a game, follow its progress, anticipate its release as the date grows nearer and nearer, when suddenly, out of nowhere, it completely disappears from the radar. What happened? Where did it go? Then you find out the awful truth: it’s been cancelled.
Why does it happen? It’s different for every game. Sometimes, the companies behind it run out of time or money, have creative differences, or just can’t get a coherent product together. Other times it’s pushed back until the next generation, or ported to another system. Sadly, there are many games that had a lot of potential that will probably never see the light of day. Here’s a short list of games that, as of now, have been cancelled.
100 Bullets: Based on the DC comic book, this game was slated to come out on last generation’s systems and was supposed to have a distinct film noir style, similar to that of Max Payne. Unfortunately, when its developer, Acclaim, went bankrupt, the game was put on hold indefinitely.
A Boy and His Blob 2: The sequel to the NES game was announced in 1990, but was never actually seen. A DS version of the game made its way onto coming-soon lists last year, but sadly, it has since faded into obscurity. Sure, this may not be the most well known game of all time, but who could forget how ridiculously fun it was to feed your pet blob different types of jellybeans to make it perform odd tricks in the original? A DS version would have been perfect, but it looks like this is one we’ll never see.
Super Smash Bros.: Yes, I am well aware that this game came out for the Nintendo 64, but did you know that it was originally designed for the Super NES system? It didn’t work out, but Nintendo later decided that it was better suited for its new 64-bit system in 1999.
Animal Crossing 2: A second helping of the real-time life simulation was being planned for the Gamecube, but never actually made it to stores. A Nintendo DS version, Animal Crossing: Wild World, came out instead, but that was more of a remake than a sequel. Hopefully we’ll see an all-new Animal Crossing game on the Wii sometime in the near future.
The 7th Guest III: Fans were so disappointed when the third installment in the award-winning PC puzzle-thriller series never came out that some of them actually got together and decided to make their own, known as The 13th Doll. Currently in development, it will eventually be available for download free of charge.
Starcraft: Ghost: You knew this was coming! The tactical game developed by Blizzard was next in the beloved series, and originally announced in 2002. It was supposed to come out on the PS2, Xbox, and Gamecube, but was postponed six times and eventually put on permanent hiatus. Some fans are still hoping to see this game someday, but only time will tell if it will ever come out.
