Wii Fit Workout Update 06.11.08

Fighting Fat and the Heat

by Sarah

Welcome to the Wii Fit Workout Update, a weekly article letting you know how the Gamervision staff (those who stick with it, anyway) are doing with Wii Fit. It’s now been three weeks since the game’s launch, and as you may have read last week, I successfully managed to lose a few pounds within the first two weeks of use. Want to know if the game is still taking a toll after three weeks of aerobics, strength training, and balance exercises? Read on to find out how I did.

Last week, I stated that I had been working out 30 minutes a day, 6 days a week, and focusing primarily on aerobics. In the last few days, I’ve decided to change things up a little bit. I’m still doing 30-minute workouts, and try to do Wii Fit every day (although the recent heat wave and getting a cold have made that difficult). However, I’ve added a few specific strength exercises dedicated to toning certain parts of my body to the workout. It usually balances out to about 10 minutes of strength training and 20 minutes of aerobics a workout, give or take a little bit.

After completing the difficult island run every day for about a week straight, no small feat for me, I decided to give the game’s Free Run a try. In free run, you leave the Wii on and run with the Wii remote in your pocket, as usual, but for a set amount of time instead of a certain distance. In the meantime, you can watch TV and listen to the remote’s speakers to find out when you’re finished. At first, I wasn’t sure if I would be able to keep up a steady pace without the guidance of a running Mii, but now I know that Free Run is totally the way to go. Running is a lot less tedious and boring when you’re watching TV, and the time seems to pass more quickly. Also, Free Run measures the distance you’ve run in addition to time, so you can set new goals for yourself. I had no idea I could run 1.6 miles in 10 minutes!

I also finally got up the nerve to try the expert Rhythm Boxing, ten minutes of fast-paced punching, dodging, and stepping. It was a challenge, but I enjoy punching things, so I didn’t have much of a problem getting through it. I still like aerobics more than strength training, but incorporating both into my workout has led to my best results yet as far as weight loss, BMI, and even balance. Stronger muscles means better balance, right?

While I’ve been having great results from using Wii Fit on a daily basis, not all of the Gamervision staff have been able to stick with it, as you can see:

What about the rest of you? Is anyone happy with Wii Fit? Anyone regret making this purchase? Whether or not you’re seeing results, feel free to share your Wii Fit progress with the rest of us.

I hate that Nintendo guilt trip shit. I stopped playing Brain Age 2 because I know that Dr. Kawashima is going to get on my ass for staying away for so long.
