Wii Software Update Eliminates Homebrew

No Day of the Tentacle For You!

by Sarah

Last night, I was watching the Phillies game when my Wii starting radiating its ominous, familiar blue light. Instead of leaving it alone until I felt like updating the system, which is what I usually do, I decided to see what the blue glow was all about. As per usual, it indicated yet another system update, one that would allow me to “move a Mii from the Mii Plaza to the Mii Parade in the Mii Channel”. That didn’t really seem too imperative to me. But wait, there’s more!

As the message stated, the update was also intended to rid the system of “unauthorized modifications” on the Wii, meaning hacks like the LucasArts homebrew some brilliant modder came up with a while back. Pretty cute of Nintendo to try to sneak that in as if it was some sort of afterthought, huh? “Hey guys, do this update and you can put more Miis in the Mii parade! Yay! Oh, and we’re just gonna go ahead and make sure you’re not doing anything illegal with your Wii, no big.”

This new update kind of bums me out a little bit. It’s not that I have a hacked Wii or anything, but I liked knowing that the option is at least there, should I ever decide to void my warranty and go crazy with the homebrew. Then again, hackers will probably find something new to do with the Wii in about ten minutes, so I guess I shouldn’t be too worried.
