Wii Sports Resort Sells Half a Million Copies in the U.S.

Breaking: Nintendo Prints Money

by Sarah

I don’t think anyone in the world would be surprised to hear that Wii Sports Resort, Nintendo’s flagship title for the Wii Motion Plus, sold a lot of units. However, it’s still mighty impressive that during the first week the game was available in the United States, Wii Sports Resort sold 500,000 copies, or one every 1.5 seconds, according to Nintendo’s Cammie Dunaway. According to a press release from Nintendo, Cammie stated, “This tells us consumers were eagerly waiting to get their hands on these fun activities, and it’s a great start for a game that will have long-lasting appeal.” Translation: “This tells us that hardcore gamers can go fuck themselves. All-ages games for the win!”

Okay, that might be a little mean. To be fair, Wii Sports Resort is pretty fun, and is also doing well critically. Even though I knew it was going to be a hit, the numbers still surprised me a little bit, considering those 500,000 units aren’t even including those sold in Japan or other regions of the world. It looks as though the game itself and the MotionPlus are going to be printing money for Nintendo throughout the rest of the year, if not for years to come.
