Android Users Go Crazy for Angry Birds
Two Million Downloads in Less Than a Week
by Sean

Late last week, mobile games' developer Rovio ported its immensely popular title Angry Birds to the Android smartphone. According to the company's official Twitter page, in just under seven days, 2 million people have downloaded the game. This is in addition to the millions of purchasers who have already downloaded it from the Apple App Store. The company announced back in August that that particular version had surpassed the 6.5 million sold mark.
If you're not fortunate enough to know the joy that Angry Birds is, essentially it's a physics-based game where birds with different abilities are shot at buildings housing sadistic egg-stealing pigs. It doesn't sound like much, but it really is some of the most fun I've had with a phone app in a long time. While the Apple version sells for a dollar, the Android port is a free/ad-based version.
Rovio has previously said on Twitter that the reason the Android is a free port is because, "paid apps have not done very well on Android", but has also announced that the next update to the game will bring an ad-free, paid version. With the game scheduled to come to DS, PSP, and PS3 at some point down the line, it seems inevitible that we'll hear more of these kinds of announcements. Those little birds are just that addictive.
