Antispore.com Revealed to be a Hoax

Seems a Long Way to Go for a Six Month Old Joke

by Sean

Spore has the potential to be another homerun for the master of all things Sim, Will Wright. The buzz since last week's release is that the evolution simulator is as much fun as any of Wright's earlier collaborations with Praxis Games, and it is sure to be one of the year's biggest selling titles. Earlier this week, however, we heard from a dissenting voice, that of antispore.com.

Proclaiming to be an anti-evolution, pro-Creationist Midwestern woman, the unnamed blogger posted a week's worth of rambling rants about how Will Wright, using his evil Spore recruitment tool, would help corrupt the minds of children into believing in Darwin's theories. Debate raged as to whether or not the site actually believed the rants it engaged in. For one thing, the first ad on the site is for Spore itself. Secondly, the most of her arguments were drawn out and disjointed.

Last night, anyone who had placed their bet on the "hoax" side of the argument cashed in. It turns out that not only was antispore.com a huge fake, it was nothing more than an elaborate Rick Roll.

The post last night, entitled "Understand my beliefs please" included this paragraph:

But the Bible teaches us that God was not done with man. For we were His creation and He then spoke to Noah in Genesis 8:21-27 after the flood.

“21. The LORD smelled the pleasing aroma and said in his heart: “Never again will I curse the ground because of man, even though every inclination of his heart is evil from childhood. And never gonna give you up. 22. “Never gonna let you down.” 23.”Never gonna run around and desert you.” 24. “Never gonna make you cry.” 25. “Never gonna say goodbye.” 26. “Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you.” 27.”Never truly believe anything you read on the Internet. There will always be cases of Poe’s Law.”

It’s these teachings that I’ve spent my life learning, believing and becoming, that have made me the woman that I am today.

So that's it?! That was the big to-do? I'm sorry, but I think the whole RickRoll thing stopped being funny about five seconds after the first time it was funny. I mean, kudos on whoever put this thing together, but I mean... really? RickRoll? Who does that?

What I think is hilarious is that, over 1000 comment posts in, it seems people still think he's serious, and are yelling at the host for being a religious bigot.

As for why it was a Rickroll? Why not? It's a good shorthand for "This is all bunk," you can lead into it subtly, and by this point it's more a popculture reference than an actual gag. What other punchline would have worked? No other internet Meme that I can think of would have worked; a Rickroll is pretty much internet shorthand for "Haha, gotcha!"

Hah, nice. I'll admit it got me, simply because I actually do know people like that. A lot of them family. One of them was formally myself. I got tired of this sort of belief system and decided to go out and find my own.
