In Bayonetta, players will take on the titular role, a shapeshifting witch who, upon waking from a 500 year slumber, finds herself with no memory of who or what she is, nor of how she got to be where she is. Through a combination of magical attacks and a mastery of firearms, she will become a formidable foe for legions of heaven's angels. Yeah, that's right, she'll be taking on God's army with the hopes of destroying the powers of good with her darkness. It's a bit of a strange choice for a game heroine, and in a new developer diary, Hideki Kamiya, the game's director, and producer Yusuke Hasimoto explain some of the reasons behind that choice.

Having the main character fight against the forces of good, rather than evil, is an interesting twist for a game, and it looks like it wasn't just a random decision by the development team. As Kamiya says in the video, since no one has made this kind of game before, the team had nearly limitless freedom in deciding how to design the angels. Chances are you already have an idea in your head of what an angel looks like, and chances are equally good that what you imagine looks nothing like the enemies of Bayonetta. Also, boot guns may be the coolest thing ever.
