Dark Void Tactical Freedom Developer Diary
Live People, and Still No Brad Pitt? What a Rip!
by Sean

The number of videos that Capcom has released for Dark Void is quickly approaching the level of an Erich von Stroheim production. Since the announcement of the "final cinematic trailer", there have been a pair of videos released that are pretty clearly trailers featuring some of the game's more cinematic elements, thus negating the claim of "final". Today, there's a new video (the first of a five part series) where two of the game's producers, Morgan Gray and Shana Bryant, highlight a particular aspect of the gameplay. Today's video, entitled "Tactical Freedom", shows off the amount of fluidity that each enemy encounter will allow William Grey, the game's protagonist.
View, if you dare:
I've made no secret of my fear that the game's flight and fight mechanics are appearing worryingly repetitive, and although this particular boss encounter looks pretty good, it does seem as though William's arsenal of moves is somewhat limited. Granted, you can clearly see that no two boss fights will be identical, and within each fight there seems to be a fair amount of freedom. But you hear Shana say in the beginning of the video that this fight is late in the game, meaning that almost all of Grey's techniques are likely unlocked. So I'm still thinking that the prime gameplay mechanic of Dark Void is treading on gimmick territory. Maybe the rest of these developer diaries will set my mind at ease. Only time will tell.
