Dead Space 2 Ruins Another Childhood Classic
First It Was "Twinkle, Twinkle", Now It's "Ring Around the Rosey"

Right from the opening sequence of Dead Space, EA Redwood (now Visceral Games) created a chilling atmosphere that permeated every aspect of the game. One area that was especially well realized was the game's sound, and specifically, the minimalist use of music. If you've played the original game, chances are you remember feeling the hair stand up on the back of your neck as a voice softly sang, "Twinkle, twinkle, little star...". A new trailer for Dead Space 2, seen above, shows pretty definitively that the developer hasn't lost its knack for crafting a sense of terror and dread using little more than a lilting singing voice. Seriously, not since "One, two, Freddy's coming for you..." has gentle, seemingly soothing harmony been so scary.
Granted, "Ring Around the Rosey" is a song written at the height of the Black Plague, with the "rosey" signifying the rosacea-like rashes that accompanied the horrid disease, the "ashes" referring to the creamated bodies, and "we all fall down" reminding everyone how many millions died from the outbreak. Couple that with the waves upon waves of monsters that beset Isaac Clarke at every turn in the sequel, and you have all the makings of a great trailer. The only decision I have to make about this game is whether or not I need the $80 edition with the Plasma Cutter.
