DJ Hero 2 Song List Dropped

Over 100 Tracks Comprising Both Hip and Hop

by Sean

DJ Hero was trumpted by Activision as being the next big thing in the rhythm game genre. With its innovative turntable peripheral, it was supposed to bring  fans of dance and hip hop to game consoles the same way Guitar Hero and Rock Band did for fans of rock music. Unfortunately, in spite of mostly positive reviews, the game struggled at retailers, only recently passing the million sales mark, and failing to live up to the expectations Activision had for it. However, this is Activision we're talking about, and mediocre sales have never stood in the way of milking a franchise for all its worth, and so it is that the publisher announced back in June that there would in fact be a DJ Hero 2. Perhaps in response to Harmonix choosing to unveil the full set list for Rock Band 3 yesterday, Activision has chosen today to release the song list for DJ Hero 2.

As opposed to the first game, DJ Hero 2 seems to have a much more accessible track list (read: songs you've heard of), including classics of not only the hip hop genre, but also metal, disco, and techno. While one would expect to see Lady Gaga, Gorillaz, or DJ Qbert, seeing names like Donna Summer, New Order, or Metallica (Metallica!?!) may make one do a double take.

In addition to a more eclectic mix of artists, DJ Hero 2 is also adding a few new gameplay wrinkles that the first lacked. Although the first game supported singing on a microphone, it didn't count for or against the final score. This time around, the rapping (or singing) on the mike will count towards the score, as the game will measure pitch, beat and rhythm. Also, one of the biggest complaints about the first game was the very limited way that players interacted with the tracks. Part of being a DJ is the ability to put one's own spin (pun definitely intended) on a song, but DJ Hero only allowed for playing the mixes in one specific way. This time around, Activision is promising that players will be able to freestyle on the scratching, crossfading, and sampling.

It remains to be seen if the improvements, both to gameplay and the variety of music, will be enough to make DJ Hero 2 the commercial hit that Activision had hoped the first game would be. We'll find out in October. Here's that full track listing:
