E3 10: Isaac Clarke Speaks in New Dead Space 2 Trailer
Gone Are the Days of Grunts and Screams

Above you can see the newest video of Dead Space 2, fresh from the EA booth at E3. Although there is some footage here that first showed up in the trailer released this past weekend, there is also a ton of new stuff to look at. More importantly, there is more in this video to listen to. That's right, Isaac Clarke, the man who went an entire game without saying more than, "UNGH!" and, "HRMPH!", has been given some lines. Sure, there's also some tantalizingly brutal action and what look like terrifying enemies and environments, but come on people, Isaac is talking!
It's early to pass judgement, but I have to say that I'm a little disappointed in the decision by Visceral to break our hero's vow of silence. One of the scariest things about the first game was the introspective and calm moments that came right before a swarm of Necromorphs attacked you. You'd find yourself in a locked room that's just littered with fresh ammo and health packs, and only one switch to pull, knowing you could face certain destruction. And then you'd hear Nicole's disembodied voice, reminding you to join her, to make "us" whole again. The terror came from the anticipation of what was about to happen to you, and as a player, Isaac's stoic silence went a long way to enhancing that feeling. The way it plays in this trailer makes Isaac seem more like Jen, the whiny protagonist of the film The Dark Crystal, which, for as good as it is, is nearly ruined by long stretches of voiceover. Granted, Dead Space and The Dark Crystal don't have much in common, but I preferred when they had nothing in common.
