E3 10: Shaun White Skateboarding Trailer

Destroy the City

by Sean

The videos are just streaming out of Los Angeles at this point (get it?), with one game after another getting the full-on trailer treatment from publishers and developers. Posted below for your viewing pleasure is the latest (and in no way last), this one coming from Ubisoft. Yesterday the grown man who allows people to call him "The Flying Tomato", AKA Shaun White, took the stage during Ubi's presser to introduce the world to his latest brain child: Shaun White Skateboarding. Although the trailer doesn't show off any gameplay footage, it does appear to have had a large special effects budget.

Take a look:

I can't see how this kind of city re-formation mechanic would work in a game, which leads me to believe that Shaun White Skateboarding will be much more Tony Hawk (pre-failboard) than Skate. That is, the way these skaters take apart the random metropolis they find themselves in looks much more like a straight-up video game, complete with 1,000,000+ point combos, than a simulator. The oddest thing of all about this trailer is that in the entirety of it, there is no appearance of Mr. White. Maybe this is Ubi's way of telling gamers, "It's all about you!" or maybe Shaun's busy schedule of dominating every extreme sport while somehow continuing to be a giant douche bag wouldn't allow him to show up. Look for the game this fall.
