Although EA has nearly all the money in the world, even they as a company can't afford to run servers for every game they've ever released. In keeping with that idea, the publisher has unveiled its schedule of games that will soon be taken off of online life support. For the most part, the list consists of a mix of older sports games and games for last gen consoles. However, there are a few games on the list that seem, at least to me, like some people may still want to play (Tiger Woods PGA 09 and Madden NFL 10 for the Wii springs right to mind). Additionally, as EA's licensing deal with Middle-Earth Enterprises has expired, the company has been forced to shut down servers for all of its Lord of the Rings games.

Although several dozen titles are facing the online chopping block, EA claims that what will be axed represent roughly 1% of "all peak online players across all EA titles". The claim is that, in spite of what many people may think, the behind-the-scenes work required to keep the older games' support active is time intensive, and would be better directed towards the other 99% of games that people are playing.
