EA Lays Off Some Boom Blox Staffers
Like a Baseball Knocking Down Careers

Electronic Arts has laid off an undisclosed number of developers from its Boom Blox team in Los Angeles. In a statement made to Kotaku, EA announced the cutbacks, stating that these firings are not connected to the company's plans to only publish "very high profit contributor and high unit sellers".
A company spokesperson said of the move:
"This is a routine event and not in any way related to EA's announced restructuring. Moving projects to leverage development strengths is common in global studio organizations. In this case, a small project has been moved from EA Los Angeles, to the EA Bright Light Studio in Guildford, UK, where the Harry Potter franchise and several of the Hasbro properties are developed. A small number of employees were impacted by the decision. All eligible employees will receive severance and outplacement assistance. EA remains fully committed to maintaining its EALA studio which is the headquarters for the mobile division as well as for development of franchises like Medal of Honor, Command & Conquer and others."
Originally released in 2008, Boom Blox received high praise from critics, and sold 450,000 copies. That was good enough to warrant a sequel, Boom Blox Bash Party, which was released last year. Although the games were both a lot of fun, and great for a party, they failed to find huge support in the marketplace. There has been no word from EA as to what, if anything, these layoffs mean to the future of the Boom Blox franchise. Over the summer, the company assured the world that it was still very invested in its partnership with Steven Spielberg, who is listed as the game's designer. Hopefully we'll see more Blox in the future, even if there are fewer people around to work on the games.
