Cliffy B. and his team at Epic Games have created a very complete and realistic-feeling dystopian future in Gears of War. And early videos and screenshots lead most people to believe that Gears 2 will not only continue in the same vein, but also show us more of that world.

But for those of us who need more Gears there will soon be another option. Epic has announced a deal with Del Ray books to bring a series of novels based on the Gears of War games to bookshelves. October 28 will bring the first book in an expected trilogy, entitled "GEARS OF WAR: THE BATTLE OF ASPHO FIELDS", to bookshelves worldwide. That gives readers nine whole days to get caught up on their fine literature before the game hits the shelves.

Authored by New York Times bestselling author Karen Traviss (of Star Wars novels fame) "THE BATTLE OF ASPHO FIELDS" will tell the story of humanity's continued struggle for survival. Picture this: "the last human stronghold on Sera braces itself for another onslaught from the Locust Horde, as ghosts come back to haunt Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago."

“After finishing the first Gears of War game, players were left wanting to know more about Delta Squad and the events leading up to Emergence Day,” said Epic Games’ president Michael Capps. “This trilogy of novels opens up whole new worlds of storytelling opportunities, and will add even more context to the upcoming comic book series, game sequel and motion picture. We loved Karen Traviss’ work on the Republic Commando series, and we can’t wait to get her Gears book to our fans.”

Of course this is all predicated on the idea that gamers read. As a self-proclaimed admirer of the written word, I personally will pick this one up. What about you?
