Goldeneye 007 May Never Make it to Virtual Console

So Says the Game's Original Producer

by Sean

I have made no real secret of my desire to see Goldeneye 007, Rare's benchmark first-person shooter, ported to the Wii's Virtual Console. I mean, with Nintendo adding new games every week (of varying quality), it only seems natural that eventually they'd get around to adding this 64-bit classic. It has such a large and loyal fanbase, and I'm certain it would break download records if it became available. Sadly, it looks more and more as though fanboys like myself are destined to be eternally disappointed, at least according to the game's original producer.

In an interview with the Official Nintendo Magazine, Martin Hollis put the following dagger in my heart when asked about the chances of seeing Goldeneye on the VC:

“There’s always someone with some exclusivity agreement, so there’s lots of lawyers… I’m not going to hold my breath. I’d love it to happen, but I can’t see it.”

Now, as Sarah was quick to point out when I started whining about this quote out loud, I already own Goldeneye 007. In fact, at this moment, it is about thirty feet away from me sitting on top of a working N64 (which Sarah offered to hook up for me). I bought it in November of 2007 during VGXPO, and have played it for a total of maybe 15 minutes. But that's not the point! One of the big selling points for me for the Wii was the possibility of owning all of my favorite Nintendo games in one handy console. The fact that lawyers are the only thing standing between reality and my dream is an annoyance of a level I can barely explain. Is anyone else outraged by this, or am I all alone?

Seriously... do you want me to hook up the Nintendo 64? The Virtual Console's got bigger problems. Maniac Mansion isn't even on there yet!

Even though it's really not as good as we all remember, this is still sad.

Yeah, it's been such a big deal for so long, I'm afraid Goldeneye doesn't even hold up anymore.....

I'd rather see Perfect Dark on XBLA than GE on VC.

I wish we would get this game on the PSN and XBL. Would be nice to see an "HD Remix" of the game.
