Gran Turismo Will Have Vehicle Damage After All

Someday, Maybe, Possibly, Who Knows?

by Sean

As a franchise, Gran Turismo has always been at the forefront of the racing genre in terms of graphics and driving simulation. The PlayStation version essentially brought the concepts of drafting and vehicle modification to consoles, and each game in the series has continued the tradition of excellence. However, there has always been one area where Gran Turismo has fallen flat on its face in terms of simulation, and that is in damage modelling. Maybe it's because so much time was put into making the cars as photorealistic as possible, or maybe it's the idea that the manufacturers who licensed the cars don't really want people to associate their vehicles with horrific high-speed crashes. Whatever the reason, the GT cars have always suffered from never taking any damage, no matter how hard you crash them. It looks like that may be about to change.

In an interview given earlier this year, series creator Kaz Yamauchi indicated that at some point in the future, Gran Turismo would add not only dynamic weather conditions, but also "we will soon be able to simulate damage to the cars".

Now, bear in mind, the original announcement for Gran Turismo 5: Prologue said that the game would have damage modelling. And then there was a rumor that a patch would add it, but that has never come about. So now we have to assume that the still-to-be-dated Gran Turismo 5 will be the one to break the barrier. Here's hoping for an announcement at E3.

Damage would be nice, but if it's like Forza I will probably play with it off.

I know, I know, it's kind of a weak-ass move, but I don't want to pay exuberant amounts of monies to fix my car after every race. I want that money to add a sweet spoiler!

The fun is never actually wrecking your own car and never getting hurt

All I want is cosmetic damage, or at least the option for all damage to be cosmetic. I'm with you, Racoonacon; I have no desire to spend my hard-earned racing dollars on body repairs.
