Halo Wars Sells a Million

Becomes the Best Selling RTS Game of Its Generation

by Sean

Microsoft has announced that their real time strategy release Halo Wars has just sold the one millionth copy, and has become the best selling RTS of this current console generation. While this is nowhere near as impressive as the sales numbers for games like Halo 3 or Grand Theft Auto IV, it stands as a testament to the power of Halo-fanboyism.

In addition to the great sales numbers, MS is also pounding their corporate chest about some of the XBL figures for Halo Wars. From their release, these include:

· There have been more than 2.6 million multiplayer matches played

· More than 118 years of time has been spent in multiplayer matches on Xbox LIVE

· On average, more than 200,000 “Halo Wars” fans have taken up arms in battles between the UNSC and Covenant each day

118 YEARS?! Doesn't that number seem a bit high to anyone else? I'm not sure how to feel about the fact that 118 years of time have been spent in multiplayer matches. On one hand, it's a nice change of pace to write a story that shows how well a company is doing. On the other, part of me has to wonder what else humanity could be doing with those 118 years. Cure disease? Feed the hungry? Although, when one considers the kind of person you run into in a Halo Wars multiplayer match, it's probably for the best that these guys stay home.

If you ask me, the only reason why it is the best-selling RTS of this console generation is because it's exclusive to the 360. Any RTS fan worth his or her salt would rather play an RTS on the PC if it were available.

    Nothing surprising there.
