Jhonen Vasquez Goes to Rapture
Comes Back With Awesome Artwork
by Sean
Several months ago, 2K Games asked comic book artist Jhonen Vasquez, creator of Invader ZIM, Johnny the Homicidal Maniac, and Squee, to create an image for Bioshock 2 that would represent "the game, its characters, and the atmosphere of the city". The above picture represents his finished work, entitled "The Sisters", and I for one am pretty impressed by what he came up with.
Any fan of Vasquez's work will instantly recognize several of the artist's recurring motifs in this image- those big eyes on the foreground little sister, the long spindly limbs on the Big Daddy, various hoses and tubes running throughout the foreground and background - all are hallmark Jhonen Vasquez. And the attention to detail that the artist has put into this work is rather impressive too. See the cracks in the glass on the left wall and the ceiling? The puddles of water pooling around the little sister's feet? Or the look of shock and horror on her face? It all makes for a terrifying and awesome piece of art.
Vasquez has written an extensive description of his creative process for "The Sisters" over at The Cult of Rapture. This includes not only several paragraphs describing the various iterations the painting went through, but also sketches of the work in progress.
For anyone attending next week's San Diego Comic-Con, make sure you stop by the 2K booth early on Saturday the 25th. Jhonen Vasquez will be at the booth from 2-4PM to meet fans, sign autographs, and give away 500 limited edition copies of "The Sisters" to lucky attendees.

yay! jhonen is teh awesome.
i wish i could understand why people like this guy so much. this work looks alright, but there are so many better artists they could have tapped for this job that would have made an absolutely jaw-dropping piece instead of one that makes you go "ooh, creepy." before you forgot it ever existed.
@00.19: bite your tongue! i love jhonen's work. yes his hallmark is creepy but that doesn't make him any less talented.
@00.19 - for me it's about the artwork he produces. Iconic, distinctive, easily recognizable, unique, and generally, full of black humor. Sure, there are probably other artists that can/should have been asked to do it, and bear in mind that the post on Cult of Rapture labels this as "Part One", but that's not a mark against Jhonen.
This is an awesome piece of artwork! I love all the detail! I've been a fan of Jhonen Vasquez for a long time. In fact I was just asking my co-workers if there was any new comic work of his since I Feel Sick from him. Is there?
That looks AWESOME. I'm definitely 100% interested in this. Maybe a print?
I'm with Sean. Maybe he's not the most talented man in the world, but you can't deny that Jhonen's work is distinctive, and always gorgeous. This piece is freakin' awesome.
