Just Cause 2 Demo Tops 2 Million Downloads

That's 2 Million Brilliant Gamers

by Sean

If you haven't checked out the demo for Eidos/Square's upcoming open world stunt-fest Just Cause 2, I have two things to say to you. 1. What the hell are you waiting for? Have you not seen the videos of Rico Rodriguez using his grappling hook to blow shit up on top of other shit? 2. You're apparently in a minority, as the developer has announced that since its release on March 4th, the demo has been downloaded over 2 million times.

In case two million downloads isn't impressive enough for you, we've been given a hint at just what that actually breaks down to. Since March 4th, players have driven enough miles around Panau Island to make a trip from the Earth to the moon four times. Thirty million residents of the island have been killed, 2.5 million of them as a result of headshots, a million thrown from hijacked vehicles, and 27,000 people have died as a result of "Piñata" kills. I can only imagine that must be tethering a victim to a tree and meleeing him to death, but that's speculation on my part. Oh, there has also been enough BASE jumping pulled off to freefall through the Earth's core, pole-to-pole, twice.

One can't help but wonder if the success of the demo is going to translate to retail sales for the finished game. While it's a ton of fun to run around Panau during a free tester, will gamers make a purchase decision in an already crowded market? Only time will tell.
