Kung-Fu LIVE Coming to PS3 This Fall

Can You Kick It? Yes You Can.

During this past E3, Sony and Microsoft were keen on making a big deal about their new motion control peripherals, and the games that would utilize them. MS claimed that Kinect would be the way of the future, while Sony assured us that Move was the one and true technology (Nintendo, meanwhile, had to have held in some laughter, as they used the event to just annouce a slew of awesome titles). This morning, Sony announced a new motion controlled PS3 exclusive, Kung-Fu LIVE. The new IP promises to literally put you in a classic 2D-style kung-fu action game, allowing players to beat up invisible enemies.

Check out the trailer:

If you were paying attention, you may have noticed something missing from that teaser. In case you missed it, I'll tell you: there is no Move controller anywhere in that footage. Apparently, Kung-Fu LIVE will only need the PlayStation Eye in order to capture the movement of gamers. So the company's newest game, which looks like it would be a perfect fit for the company's newest control technology, only needs a peripheral released in 2007. It doesn't exactly fill one with confidence over the potential of Move.

Back to the game though. While I've often and long lamented the proliferation of silly motion control titles, Kung-Fu LIVE actually looks like it could be a good party game. It's the kind of thing that I don't know if I'd ever pick up for myself, but if I was at a friend's house and he broke it out, I'd give it a shot. The other thing that it seems to have going in its favor is that it's going to be a PSN release, rather than a full retail game. That means that, at the very least, it will ship with a reasonable price point. No release date or actual pricing for the game has been announced yet, but the developer will be showing it at both Gamescom and PAX Prime, so expect more details from those shows.
