LostWinds 2 Will Be the 100th European WiiWare Game

The Sequel Makes a Milestone

by Sean

Back in October of 2007, Nintendo launched the WiiWare channel. The two years that have passed have seen both the mainstream and the indie development community come up with some amazing games, as well as more than a fair share of "meh" titles. There have also been a lot of stinkers. And tomorrow, the sequel to arguably the best game to hit WiiWare comes home, as LostWinds 2: Winter of the Melodias is added. Apart from having the distinction of following up the service's best example of quality gaming, LostWinds 2 also carries the added distinction of being the 100th game added to the European version of WiiWare, an honor that doesn't escape Frontier Developments.

In a statment on the milestone, David Braben, head of LostWinds developer Frontier Developments, spoke of his love for WiiWare, "We launched the original LostWinds game on WiiWare with much anticipation, as it was such an exciting and new way to access games. We are now thrilled to be able to mark the 100th game launch with LostWinds: Winter of the Melodias."

If you haven't had a chance to play LostWinds yet for fear of being disappointed by the system's limitations, you really don't know what you're missing. Frontier has gotten a lot out of a delivery service that many turn up their nose at, and I can't imagine Winter of the Melodias will be any different. And while it's not quite the 2 billion milestone the iTunes app store recently hit, Nintendo seems to have found a pretty good rhythm with WiiWare on both sides of the pond. Now if they would only throw these games on a disk or come out with a DS/DSiWare version, they'd really be onto something.
