Microsoft Details Indie Games Pricing

Does This Bring XBL Audiosurf Closer to Reality?

by Sean

In a post yesterday on the XNA Creators Club, Microsoft revealed some previously unknown details and a new pricing structure for independent game creators. This is all a part of the switch from what is currently known as "Xbox Live Community Games", to what will now be referred to as "Xbox Live Indie Games". The most interesting change coming is to the pricing of the games, which will now fall into a three-tier system.

Under the new structure, games will either be 80, 240 or 400 (approx $1-5). Although the only games that qualify for the 80 point price will be games that are under 50MB. Games currently priced at 200 will automatically be moved to the 80 level, unless the developer chooses a different price point for them. And games that are now 800 can stay at that price, unless the developer adds an update, at which point a one of the new three will have to be selected.

There's also some details given to developers about how reputation, updates, and other minutiae will work for people looking to get their independent games onto XBLA. With MS having dated the Indie Games section for July, time is quickly running out.
