New Blur Developer Diary Highlights Progression

Explanation of the Racer's Story Mode from the Production Team

by Sean

It's been a little while since we've heard anything about Bizarre Creations' upcoming racing title Blur. Actually, to be exact, the last bit of news we got about the game was that it was going to be delayed until April of this year, in order to "give the development team more time to enhance the game's innovative and distinctive online multiplayer gameplay", which, at least to me, sounds like code for "buggy online play". Regardless, a new trailer out today from the developer highlights an aspect of the game that I'm not sure many people were overly concerned about, which is the story mode.

Take a look:

In terms of plotlines,  there isn't going to be a lot that is innovative or groundbreaking for Blur. You'll play as a "newcomer" to the racing scene, who has to earn respect by participating in a series of increasingly difficult races. Moving to different countries will introduce new characters, all of whom will have his or her own distinct driving style. Honestly, for a game that is focused on the online component more than the single-player mode, I find it a bit surprising that Bizarre would ask Blur's team to speak in such glowing terms about the game's story. Still, the gameplay footage in this, and in other trailers for the game, show an art style that is somewhere between Burnout Paradise and Mario Kart, so there's at least some hope that Blur won't disappoint. Although, the fact that it's being released in the same timeframe as the very impressive looking Split Second doesn't bode well, and the fact is that Blur will need more than a generic narrative to make it worth our while. We'll all find out in April.
