Nintendo Console Sales Figures Are Through the Roof
Tens of Millions Several Times Over
by Sean

Nintendo sent a press release this morning detailing the fiscal year of 2009. Aside from showing how many billions of yen the House of Mario raked in (1.83 trillion yen in sales, 555 billion yen profit), the statement also provides data on the sales figures for individual games and consoles. Specifically, Nintendo has announced that for the last fiscal year, 62 new titles, including those published by third-parties, sold over a million copies on the Wii and DS. I'm going to say that again, in case it didn't sink in: 62 new games released on Nintendo consoles surpassed the million sales mark last year alone. According to Joystiq, this brings the total number of million-plus selling titles on Nintendo's current systems to 145.
Now we all know that it's likely that over 40 of those 62 million-selling games were nothing more than crappy shovelware (how many Bratz and Petz games do your nieces and nephews have?), but there is no disputing the fact that these figures are nothing short of stunning, especially in light of the rest of the world's economic climate.
Although a loud cry was heard from the blogosphere when Nintendo's promised "core gamer" appeal turned out to be nothing more than Wii Music, it's clear to see that the public at large are fine with SD graphics, waggle, and weak online support. Plus, we can always hope that Nintendo will reinvest these profits into making their next console into the must-have device of the next generation.

Holy crap, do they print money.
You know, everyone tells me that parents and little kid gamers are to blame for shovelware. But I look back at my game collection when I was a wee button masher and I don't see any kiddie games there. Nothing that ended with a "z" and nothing outside of a lousy X-Men game that would have scored under a 7.0 by today's standards. There's still good games to be bought. Why do today's children have such low standards?
Attention parents: UR DOIN IT WRONG!!!1
Dollar for dollar video games are still a good buy.

Today's children? I think we all remember playing the NES Ghostbusters game at some point.
Don't hate.. NES Ghostbusters was pretty good, until the last level.
