Nintendo's 2008 Sales Numbers Are Beyond Impressive
"Record Setting", "Recession Beating", "Mind Boggling" All Spring to Mind
by Sean

The so-called "hardcore" gaming movement may have just gotten its wake-up call from all the "fanboys", "noobs" and "casual gamers" in the world. Big time.
Nintendo, through NPD, has released their aggregate sales numbers for the calendar year 2008, and, at the risk of hyperbolizing, Nintendo is easily the most stable company in an industry that has been, to say the least, faltering of late. Their combined console, first party, and third party units that sold last year simply defy comparison.
Let's start with consoles:
For the first time ever, 10 million of the same console were sold in the United States of America in a year. What console was that? That's right, the Nintendo Wii. Actually, to be more accurate, the Wii sold 10.17 million in the US in '08. Needless to say, it was the best selling console in this country last year.
The second best selling console in the States? Yeah, the DS. Not quite hitting the 10 million mark, Nintendo's handheld console managed to find an astounding 9.95 million buyers last year.
Let me repeat that.
10.17 million new Wii consoles sold. 9.95 million DS handhelds purchased.
What recession?
Now, let's look at games:
As impressed as we all were by the PR surrounding the sales figures of GTA IV and LittleBigPlanet, the final tallies for 2008 show how minimal these numbers are when compared to the sales of the more "casual" games. The top four selling games of 2008 were Nintendo Wii first party titles. In order, they were: Wii Play, Mario Kart Wii, Wii Fit, and Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
Furthermore, overall industry sales increased by 19% for 2008 vs. 2007. Nintendo titles were responsible for 99% of that increase.
Honestly, this press release, which is just under a page long, is incredibly impressive to me, not only as a gamer, but as someone who has been following the current financial situation.
It just goes to show - for all the hate that the Nintendo and the Wii gets, when push comes to shove, the masses are buying their products in record numbers.
Here's the full press release. I suggest you really read this one.
Wii & Nintendo DS Set New Industry Records
Wii Sells 10.17 Million Units & DS Sells 9.95 Million Units in a Year
REDMOND, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Before 2008, no video game system had ever been purchased by ten million Americans in a single year. But according to independent sales data released today by the NPD Group, the Wii™ console from Nintendo did just that, even during these economic times, with 2008 unit sales of 10.17 million. The Nintendo DS™ portable handheld system came in a close second, with 2008 unit sales of 9.95 million. Each of them broke the previous yearly unit sales record set in 2007 by Nintendo DS with sales of 8.52 million.
Consequently, Wii represented 55% of all next generation home console sales in 2008, while Nintendo DS claimed 72% of all portable system sales in 2008.
“Our type of entertainment has now moved to the point where there is no longer a question that if you offer consumers an expanded definition of what a video game can be, and deliver that idea with quality and affordability in mind, millions of new people will start playing video games,” said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “Concepts like Wii Fit, Guitar Hero, and Rock Band never would have seemed feasible just a few years ago, and now they’re driving growth for our the entire industry.”
NPD data released for December and all of 2008 also included the following:
- The industry’s top 4 selling games of 2008 were: Wii Play™ at No. 1, Mario Kart™ Wii at No. 2, Wii Fit™ at No.3, and Super Smash Brothers™ Brawl, at No. 4.
- Industry annual revenues jumped 19% in 2008 over 2007, and Nintendo products were responsible for 99% of those additional retail dollars.
- Nintendo DS set another industry record for system sales in any month, with 3.04 million units sold in December.
- Wii broke its own monthly record, set in December 2007, by selling 2.14 million units last month.
- In December, Nintendo titles filled 20 of the top 30 spots on the best-seller list. Six games made for Nintendo systems placed in the top 10, including Wii Music™ for Wii (No. 9), which has now sold 865,000 units following its launch in October 2008, and Mario Kart DS for the Nintendo DS (No. 7), which has sold a total of 4.3 million units 38 months after launch.
- Activision’s Guitar Hero® III: Legends of Rock and Guitar Hero® World Tour, and MTV Games/EA’s* Rock Band Special Edition Bundle all sold more units on Nintendo platforms than any other platforms in 2008.
- More 3rd party units were sold for Wii than any other home consoles in December for the 2nd consecutive month.
- For the year, more than 132 million games were sold in America for play on Nintendo systems.

Recession my ass! Well, for Nintendo anyway.
You know, I'd like to make some sort of witty comment or remark, but I think the numbers speak for themselves.
Dude, Wii Play shouldn't even count. That is so not fair. It comes with a controller! I used to sell one of those with a Wii about 95% of the time, it's a no-brainer. It's been out almost two years now! That is insane. All of those numbers are insane. Good for you, Nintendo. Now let's see you put that money into something that gamers actually want. (Ha!)
I actually thinks that these sales figures show that we need to re-define what we mean when we refer to a "gamer". Personally, I think of anyone playing a game system as a gamer, not just those of us who are more into whatever particular genre we happen to like.
Casual is the new hardcore.
Hurray for casual!!!!!!! I'm Casual all the way!!!!!!!
I know, I wasn't actually knocking casual gamers--I didn't phrase that really well. I just didn't want to say "core gamers" again because I'm getting so sick of hearing that in relation to Nintendo.
What I really meant was Nintendo should give ME something that I want. I'm selfish like that.
I'll be laughing when you all return in droves to your Wii's once Nintendo announces their star-studded lineup of fiirst party titles this E3. You know it's happening.
@Jesse - I do consider PC players in the equation. I also include people who are downloading games to their iPhones, or play MegaTouch in bars. My point is that the net is being cast wider and wider with each passing day.
Nintendo got lucky with the Wii. But I guess you can chalk it up to the acceptance of electronic gadgetry by the general (read: non-tech savvy) consumer. Mostly everyone now has an Ipod, I remember when I knew just ONE person that owned one. No one has a basic cell phone any more either.
It was bound to happen. So now you have all these former "non-gamers" who think it's the "in-thing" to own a Wii. And it helps because it's family/party friendly.
Personally, I think it's awesome. Now they know what all the fuss was about. :)
But I really hope Nintendo uses this success to come out with a new system soon that can compete technically with the PS3/360 and gets some more (good) 3rd party developers.
I just don't see these "casual gamers" sustaining N's success with the Wii for more than another year or 2. Fads do come and go.
It's too bad Sega never got their 2nd hardware moment in the spotlight though :(
