PlayStation 2 Outsells Playstation 3 in April
Guess Which One Got the Price Cut
by Sean

I have a feeling that quite a few people over at Sony aren't going to be too happy about this one. NPD sales figures for the month of April show that in North America the PlayStation 2 outsold the PlayStation 3. In fact, the PS3 sold only 127,000 units, marking its lowest sales figure since the release of the 40GB model in October of 2007. The PS2, meanwhile, managed to sell 172,000 systems for the month.
Now bear in mind that the PS2 did just get a price reduction, now retailing for $99, while the lowest price point on a PS3 is still $399. So the phrase "in this economy" can certainly apply to these figures. And despite continued denials from Sony that a PS3 price cut will be announced at E3, I'm not sure how many more months of this kind of disparity the electronics giant can take before something changes, namely the PS3's price.
What do you think - is this a fluke sales figure, due to a price cut, or does this mark a trend?

To a young kid or someone with NO video game systems, the PS2 is still a solid choice--fantastic library of games, with more actually coming out. To a parent, it's the cheapest new system available, so kind of a no-brainer. It's awesome that the PS2 is still selling like this, as if Sony hadn't already won the last generation, but sucks that the PS3 is still lagging behind in sales.
Take that, Sony! You got trounced by......ummm........other Sony.....?
...that'll teach you?
I'm with Sarah on this one: Even though there is something technically "better" out there, the expanded market isn't interested in it, and is more likely to buy something that is cheaper and established. Namely, the PS2.
I think one of the best tings you could do is to train yourself to be on a 5-year-delay with video games. Hell, if you buy a PS2 now you could sit back and enjoy all the best games without having to waste your time being excited for/spending your money on the shit ones. We are all actually fools for trying to stay on top of the gaming industry.
@Raccoonacorn: haha That's funny you should say that. My one friend does that. He bought the PS2 when the PS3 comes out and purposefully stays behind the curve. Just the other day he was ranting to me on what an amazing game shadow of the colossus is as if it just came out.
Sad. Annoying. I wish they would just take the damned thing off the market already and do a firmware update to read PS2 games on every PS3. Seriously. This is getting old.
