Sega Confirms Dreamcast Collection

Retro is So Contemporary

by Sean

Over the past few months, there has been a bit of a resurgance of older games being ported to current generation consoles. Publishers have had some success bringing HD versions of the original two God of War games to the PS3, Acitivision recently introduced a revamped Goldeneye 007 to the Wii, and we already know that rebooted and/or upgraded Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, and Mortal Kombat are currently in development. Back in November, GameStop listed (and then quickly pulled) a page for a collection of Sega Dreamcast games for the PS3 and 360. And then, nothing was heard about it. Until now.

In an interview published in the newest issue Game Informer (#213), Sega executive VP of sales and marketing Alan Pritchard has confirmed that there will in fact be a Dreamcast Collection released for the current gen consoles, but did not say which games would be on the disc.

"We actually have a Dreamcast collection coming out soon. We are looking to bring some of the old Dreamcast games to market digitally and packaged. The titles are still to be announced. The Ultimate Genesis Collection did huge numbers on PS3 and 360, so it’s an important part of our business." This quote follows on the heels of one of the most popular Dreamcast games, Crazy Taxi, being recently released digitally.

As far as rumors of a new Dreamcast console in the works, Pritchard was quick to negate them out of hand. "Unless there’s something I don’t know – no one has told me about getting back into the console business." So while we may never get another Dreamcast, we now know that at some point, we'll at least get some of the games that made the original system so popular.
