Sony Announces a New Jak & Daxter Game

Announcement Made on April 1st... Coincidence?

by Sean

Sony has announced today, April 1st, that a brand new Jak & Daxter game will be coming to the PSP and PS2 before the year is out. Let me say that again: today, April Fools' Day, one week after the huge Game Developers' Conference that companies wait all year for to announce new titles; Sony has announced a new game. Purportedly entitled Jak & Daxter: The Lost Frontier, the announcement was vague, and brief:

"If there wasn’t enough excitement from GDC last week, here’s even more! We are happy to announce that Jak & Daxter are coming to the PSP and PS2!

Developed by High Impact Games, Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier takes the intrepid pair all the way to the edge of the world. There they must battle their way past air pirates and sinister creatures in their quest to find a cure for the world’s eco shortage. Keep an eye out for this title to be available later this year!"

If it wasn't clear from my opening paragraph, I am taking this announcement with a grain of salt. No, fuck that, I'm taking this announcement with an entire shaker of salt. Although I'm sure that the legions of Jak & Daxter fans out there would love this to be a true story, chances are that Sony is pulling our collective legs. First of all, as I said before, last week was GDC. If there was a game announcement to be made, that was the time. Secondly, I find it very odd that a new game in the franchise would be coming to the PS2 and PSP. Anyone ever heard of the PS3?

There were three screenshots to accompany the announcement. We'll be sure to keep our eye on this to see if it proves to be factual. But I feel like we all need to get our brooms ready....

UPDATE: According to Joystiq, Sony has confirmed this story with the following quote, "Nope - not an April Fools."

Yeah, I really believe that Sony opted not to announce this at GDC, only to bring it up now, today. And also, that they would rather make a new first-party exclusive for the PS2 and PSP instead of the PS3.

    For sure.

Did Sony just decide to kill the PS3? Seriously? What's next? PS3s will self-destruct and they'll brainwash people into believing it never existed, so they can start anew?

I'd believe it more if those screenshots didn't look worse than the PS2 games.
