Square Enix Announces Next Lara Croft Game

"Tomb Raider" to Reboot the Franchise

by Sean

Nathan Drake has pretty much stolen the crown as the go-to character for action/adventure games, but once upon a time, a generation ago, that crown was a queen's headpiece, belonging to Ms. Lara Croft. Although a few games have been released for HD consoles bearing the likeness of Lara, the most recent being this past summer's download-only Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, none have really captured the feeling of the Tomb Raider games of yore. Square Enix, which along with Crystal Dynamics co-developed Guardian of Light, has announced today that they'll take another stab at the Tomb Raider franchise.

A brief press release from Square today let the world know that Crystal Dynamics is currently working on Tomb Raider, the eleventh game in the long-running series. At this point, we don't know much about the new game, apart from the title and that it is set to be a reboot. The press release included this cryptic quote:

"After a brutal storm destroys the boat she was travelling on, a frightened young woman is left washed ashore on an unknown beach. On her own but not alone she has only one goal, to survive."

The studios did promise that more would be revealed in the upcoming issue of Game Informer, which you can see the front cover for above. You can clearly see that Lara Croft has been given something of a makeover for the new game, appearing more bloodied and dirt-covered than we're used to seeing her. Whether or not Tomb Raider can re-capture the appeal of the original game remains to be seen, but Crystal Dynamics Darrell Gallagher is certainly excited to show the game off, saying, "[W]e are exploring things that have never been done before in this game." We'll see about that...
