Square Enix is a publisher best known for games featuring androgynous lead characters with forgotten pasts who must spend hundreds of hours learning various truths. So their announcement today of a new game currently in development comes as a bit of a shock. The new license, called Order of War, will be Squenix's first foray into the seemingly unending string of World War II games.

Here's the first trailer:

An RTS game, Order of War promises to provide "massive scale battles brought to life with a cinematic intensity never seen before in a WWII strategy game". The game gives players the opportunity to command entire armies, including ground troops, artillery, tank divisions and aircraft. The single-player mode can be played out in two campaigns – American versus German forces on the western front and German versus Russian on the eastern front – missions will be based on key historic events and operations from 1944.

Apart from being a break from the normal Squenix game formula, Order of War also represents a change on the business end of the development. Order of War will be the first release of a game developed by a western developer outside of Japan, and will also be released simultaneously across multiple territories.

There is no word yet of a release date, nor of any plans to bring it to any platforms apart from the PC, but we'll be sure to let you know when we learn more. In the meantime, check out these screenshots.
