I like Star Trek as much as the next guy, but I have to tell you that "Space. The Final Frontier..." may be getting a bit played out as an opening. Ok, we get it, Star Trek happens in space, and yeah, we know, new life, new civilizations, blah blah blah. It's not that it's not evocative, it's just become tired. Just once I'd love to see a Star Trek video that opens, "Hey what's up ya'll? Check this shit out!" But I digress...

The new trailer for Cryptic's upcoming MMO Star Trek Online opens up in that oh-so familiar way, and then proceeds to give us a taste of how the game will play. We get looks at ship combat, hand-to-hand fights, and far-flung alien worlds.

Now, apart from quitting smoking, kicking my addiction to MMOs is one of the prouder achievements of my adult life. So it's going to prove to be really difficult to stay on the wagon and not pick up what looks like such an amazing game. Coop's impressions of the game from PAX made it clear that the amount of customization and immersive nature of the gameplay experience will be right up my alley. Then this trailer comes along making the game look even better than I had anticipated. It's going to be hard to resist. Perhaps even futile.
