This Week in Jack Thompson
The Continuing Adventures of America's Favorite Insane Attorney!
by Sean
I worry sometimes that people get as sick of reading stories about Jack Thompson day after day. So I have decided that from now on, I won't give this guy more than one free plug per week. And what a week this has been...
Last we heard from our intrepid anti-hero, he had offered to assist Electronic Arts in their attempted takeover of Take Two. This is in spite of the fact that Thompson once went after The Sims for its (non-existent) full-frontal nudity. Since then, he has been up to his normal self-aggrandizing expolits. So let's pick up the story where we left it off:
Most people assumed that Jack's unsolicited offer of help (has anyone ever actually asked for his help?) to EA would be ignored or dismissed out of hand. Certainly I thought that EA would handle it internally rather than bringing the public into the conversation. But then a letter to Mr. Thompson from EA's Corporate Communication department hit the net. Apparently EA has a longer memory than does Jackie Boy about people maliciously going after their products.
Here's the letter:
Mr. Thompson,
We have received your letter to EA’s shareholder site. In response to your offer to assist in the proposed acquisition of Take-Two, we would strongly prefer that you not get involved in this matter. EA is a strong supporter of creative freedom for game developers. We feel that your past statements – including false claims about content in our games – make any collaboration with you impossible.
Sincerely,
Mariam Sughayer
Sr. Manager Corporate Communications
Electronic Arts, Inc.
That, my friends, is as close to a "fuck off" as you'll ever see come out of a corporate communications office.
Now, when I heard this I had no doubt that Jack would respond in his usual completely sane and rational manner.
I have in the last few days been contacted by a company with whom Take-Two does business. This company is now my client.
My client informs me that Take-Two has breached a substantial contract with it. It appears based upon what my client tells me that this is how Take-Two does business within the industry. This does not surprise me, as I have seen this same company up-close for a number of years. But it is surely gratifying to get corroboration of my observations, out of the blue, from a corporate entity which has been stiffed by Take-Two and which must take legal action, it seems, to get recompense. How sweet.
If you all at EA want to pursue a purchase of Take-Two without fully knowing what is “out there” in the form of liabilities, posed by my client and others, of your take-over target, you got [sic] right ahead. I’m sure EA’s shareholders will be impressed with your lack of “due diligence” exhibited first by your “don’t help us, Mr. Thompson” and now your anticipated “we don’t want to know about contractual liabilities of Take-Two” posture. Maybe the new corporate logo of EA should incorporate an ostrich…
Your corporate approach to due diligence exhibits the type of circle-the-wagons acumen that is leading the video game industry to the federal regulation that ESA’s own leaked poll indicates 65% of Americans want.
Ah Jack... always good for the last word. Even if it is completely rambling and insane. At least this time he didn't respond in rebus form... But seriously, I'm not much of a wine aficionado but even I can smell those sour grapes.

Nice move, EA! Jack Thompson needs to fall in a hole and never crawl out.
I think EA truly hurt his feelings....His pillow is now moist from the tears he's been shedding over this.
I actually asked Jack Thompson for help once. I wanted him to help me beat Halo 1 on Co-op Legendary. I heard he was really good.
He never wrote back...
"That, my friends, is as close to a "fuck off" as you'll ever see come out of a corporate communications office."
Just thought that line was hilarious.
Also, why hasn't this guy been disbarred yet? Or committed to a padded room somewhere?
To all the people (including myself) who accuse EA of stifling creative talent: This doesn't make them heroes, but at least it's something!
ha, classic. this guy reminds me of bill o'reilly only more insane. his letters are downright unprofessional and what i expect to see coming out of some kid on myspace who is in a fight with a friend. how does he get paid, honestly?
