Do you remember a time when going to the movies meant the possibility of seeing something you'd never seen before? A time when films like
Fight Club,
Pulp Fiction, and
The Matrix came with the promise of original story, amazing performances, and the risk of something novel? It seems that the more time that passes, the further we get from those days. This past summer was the "Summer of the Three-quel", with the top grossing pictures being, for the most part, the third part of a trilogy. Sure, there were some good movies (
Bourne Ultimatum springs to mind...), but where's the originality and danger? Well, we're no closer to getting back to those days. It seems that the only movies studios want to invest in is tired re-hashes of stories we've already been told. Now we get news that Warner Bros. Pictures is making a feature length movie out of the classic cartoon
Thundercats. Further, the director of the film will be Jerry O'Flaherty, who previously was the art director for
Gears of War. I suppose that the good news is that it will be CGI instead of live action, so you don't have to worry about seeing Zac Efron and Maggie Gyllenhaal donning full-body makeup. Now, I don't have a problem with bringing a video game guy to a project like this, in fact, I have every reason to think he could be quite good. But isn't it time for Hollywood to leave the things of our childhood alone and get back to making movies that matter? If anyone needs me, I'll be watching my DVDs of
Danger Mouse, praying that there isn't talk to bring Mr. Bean and Ricky Gervais to a live action version...
