Valve Responds to Charging for Left4Dead DLC
In a Nutshell: It's Not Their Fault

In early August it was announced that Valve would be releasing a DLC pack called "Crash Course" for Left4Dead. It was also announced that the new campaign would be free for PC owners, but would cost 560
on the 360. At the time it was generally assumed that charging for "Crash Course" on XBL wasn't Valve's doing, as the company has a long history of adding free content to its games, and was more likely a result of Microsoft wanting all the money in the world. In an interview with Eurogamer, Chet Faliszek, a writer at Valve, confirmed that sentiment.
"We own our platform, Steam. Microsoft owns their platform," said Faliszek. "They wanted to make sure there's an economy of value there...they have to look and say, wow, we're kind of being unfair to everybody else if these guys can do that. It's not like we're [Valve is] looking at this as, 'Oh my god, we need some money, we're going to charge,' obviously, or we'd do it on the PC. So it's just kind of the way the system works right now."
In case you're wondering "an economy of value" is business-speak for "MS wants all your money and they're going to get it". Granted, $7 isn't a ton of money to have to shell out for an entirely new campaign, but it is kind of shitty that PC gamers will get it for free. But at least now we know that it's not Valve's fault. It's also good for context, cause if you think about it, this pack is seven bucks, which means that L4D2's content would cost $35 just for the campaigns, and likely another $20-30 for the other additions. So before you start hating on Valve for what you see as profiteering with L4D2, consider how much MS could have charged if all the content in the second game had been DLC.

Good point about L4D2 cost. How is it that Burnout Paradise was able to do their DLC as free while L4D can't? I doubt that all 560 MS points are going to MS. Valve is still partially to blame in my book.
