Walmart Gets Into the Used Game Game

The Price War Adds a New Front

by Sean

Recently, Best Buy and Toys"R"Us each adopted their own models of trading and selling used video games, threatening to take a chunk out of GameStop's multi-billion dollar market, and today we get word that another company has followed suit. The latest retailer to dip its gigantic toe into the waters of used games sales is the world's largest company Walmart. Although there had been some talk in the past about the mega-mega-chain using third-party in-store kiosks for used games sales, the company has instead opted to make used games part of their in-house operations, and can now be bought and traded in stores, or purchased online.

Walmart's website claims that all games have been tested, and will come with the same 21-day warranty new game purchases have. You will be able to trade in games for the PS2, PS3, PSP, GameBoy Advance, GameCube, DS, Wii, Xbox and Xbox 360.

A quick scan of the competing websites show that, as of right now, Walmart's used game prices are slightly higher than GameStop's. For example, a used copy of Fable 2 will cost you $34.96 from Walmart, while GameStop will only charge you $24.99 (Best Buy does not list used game prices on their website). Although it's also worth mentioning that Walmart seems to have a more extensive selection for most consoles than GameStop.

So for the educated consumer, it looks like GameStop is still the best bet for pricing, if not in diversity. But I imagine that Walmart views getting into used games as just one more way to convince shoppers that everything can be had in one box store, rather than making several stops at various specified storefronts. And while no one store can bring down GameStop all by itself, if more large retailers adopt a used game model, GS could die the death of a thousand cuts.

I buy my games from Walmart now anyway. Not because they are cheaper, but because I usually decide to buy a game around 11pm and Walmart is open all night. Oh, and I hate 90 percent of Gamestop's employees.

well, i don't shop at walmart (yes, i'm a snob, or maybe i just hate box stores) and this wouldn't convince me to go there, but i can see how the unwashed masses will see it as just another item to pick up along with discount whatever else is there.

@mikeyraw: not you! you wash and smell nice :)
