Wii Sales in Japan Hit 10 Million Mark
It Was Really Just a Matter of Time, Wasn't It?

In news that is going to come as a surprise to absolutely no one, Nintendo's Wii console has passed the 10 million units sold mark in its home nation of Japan. According to Japanese data specialist Enterbrain (which is also the publisher of Japan's Famitsu magazine), the total number of Wiis sold in the Land of the Rising Sun as of February 28th 2010 was 10,009,736. It took 170 weeks for the console to hit this mark, which averages out to just under 59,000 Wiis sold per week since release.
Although it is a hell of a milestone reached in a relatively short amount of time, Kotaku was quick to put the figure into perspective, pointing out that the PS2 also reached the 10 million sales mark in Japan, but was able to do so in 131 weeks. This disparity is most likely due to the broader appeal of the PS2 as compared to the Wii, but I'm sure that Nintendo didn't mind waiting the extra nine or so months. So kudos to you, Nintendo. Your ability to make money hand over fist is seemingly unmatched in your homeland.
