Wii Sports Resort Sells 7 Million Copies

Hardcore Sales for Casual Game

by Sean

When Nintendo announced Wii Sports Resort during the 2008 E3 press event, everyone knew it would become a big seller. The combination of those adorable Miis, a family-friendly party game, and new events added up to a sure-fire top seller. In a note added to the company's earnings report last week, Nintendo announced that everyone's predictions were correct, and that in three short months, Wii Sports Resort has reached worldwide sales of close to 7 million. Additionally, the company let it be known that sales of the original Wii Sports have crossed the 50 million mark.

In other Wii sales news, Wii Fit has sold 22.5 million copies, Mario Kart Wii moved 18.4 million, Wii Play stands at 24.4 million and Wii Fit Plus has reached 2.13 million. Or, to make a long story short, Nintendo games are selling fantastically well on the Wii, and there's no reason to suspect that a perceived lack of hardcore support will slow these games down.

Still, while the news of game sales was all good for Nintendo, hardware sales, specifically those of the Wii console itself, were off. Accordingly, the company adjusted their full-year profit forcasts from 300¥ ($3.30 billion) to 230¥ ($2.53 billion). I think that if your company is only going to make two and a half billion for the year, it's probably safe to say that you're doing okay.
