As I have mentioned before, I have a long commute to work. I live in Philadelphia, but work in the burbs. This means that I spend an hour and a half on the train in each direction. Ultimately, I'm left with a lot of free time. To help pass the time, I have a newspaper subscription, my podcasts, and my DS. And since purchasing my little hand-held, I have had a few games that have kept me riveted. Puzzle Quest DS, Starfox Command, and Legend of Zelda: The Phantom Hourglass come right to mind. But other than that, most of the games I've picked up have been, for the most part, disappointing if not downright awful (Sim City DS, Mario vs Donkey Kong: March of the Minis, Vegas Casino, Phoenix Wright, the list just goes on and on...)

So my overriding motviation for buying DS games is to find something that will pass three hours as quickly as possible. So I was mildly excited when I got a chance to see a demo of WordJong at the Destineer booth at PAX.

A direct port from the flash game, WordJong is pretty much as basic as games can be. In it, you are given a stack of tiles (hence the -Jong suffix), each tile of which is a letter of the alphabet. You then spell words (hence the Word- prefix) for points. The longer the word, the higher the score. That's it. That's the game.

The game has both single and multiplayer modes. Single player can either do the Daily Puzzle in which you must attempt to beat a score set by one of seven CG avatars; the Temple Challenge in which you earn Awards based on earning points; and Battle in which you take on the avatars in turn-based word-battle. The multi-player modes are the same turn-based combat you would fight in Battle mode, but on the Nintendo Wi-Fi. You can also "Gift" a puzzle to a friend who may not yet have picked the game up.

Again, there isn't a whole about WordJong to complain or rave about. The words are spelled by touching the screen with the stylus, and that works fine. The soundtrack is meant to be soothing background noise, and it is... If you're looking for a game that you can pick up once in a while and put down again when you grow tired of spelling words, WordJong is the title for you. And at a bargain price of $20 you can't really go wrong.
