Getting Back Into Gaming
Now that I have nothing to do but find a "real" job...
by seanasaurus
The last couple of months have been pretty dry in regards to gaming for me. I've done virtually nothing since I finally put Fallout 3 to bed during spring break. Since then, I've been a good student *cough* and done nothing but study *cough* so I could graduate. But now that that's out of the way (save for a couple papers, one of which is a celebrity analysis of Simon Pegg, and an exam) I'm thinking of what I should play after I have time to play stuff again. You know... in between sending out resumes and greasing various palms to find a job.
First, I'm excited to play some more GTA: Chinatown Wars. I was really impressed with the game when I picked it up a couple weeks ago. I gave it a couple quick tries in between classes and have already amassed a small fortune dealing drugs and playing the lottery. All the fun of the old school games feels intact, the only thing I'm skeptical of is the main character. He's a bit of a prick. Not that every GTA character isn't, but this one seems to have no redeeming factors whatsoever. I'm a little leery about the fact that I'm completely revolted by the guy who's supposed to represent me in the world. Although I think I can get over it as long as I keep having fun doing the drug trading and rampages.
Second, I actually want to finish Two Worlds. That's right, I bought that game. I like it. I can forgive its multiple faults mostly based on the fact that it's a PC game trying to run unoptimized on a 360. Some of the mechanics in the game are pretty solid. I like being able to combine items, armor, weapons, etc. to form newer and stronger things. I also enjoy the terrible, cheesy translation from German. It's hilarious for a grammar nerd like me.
The list goes on of stuff I want to try out: Monsters vs. Aliens, R6: Vegas, Condemned, Demigod, Dawn of War II. I also plan on going through Fallout again... this time taking the time to talk the kids out of Paradise Falls instead of fighting them out. That action alone negated my arduous crawl to the shining beacon of evil that I wanted to end the game as.

Good writeup. I, too, will soon be graduated as well, spending most of my time, well, gaming. If you end up playing DoW II or Demigod let me know, I'd like to jump in. Us PC gamers gotta stick together.
I would definitely be down to play either PC title mentioned. I've been reading (and watching) a lot of favorable reviews, and for someone who doesn't play a lot of RTSs (read: none) I'd love to get started with some pseudo-RTSs. I forgot to mention that I would be very interested in joining a D&D campaign as I've never tried that. I recently stumbled across a play by post D&D forum that sounds promising.
Congrats on almost being done with college! Wish I could get in on the PC gaming with you guys, but my Dell laptop isn't really built for that. (Coop, get me a computer.)
I do highly recommend getting into D&D, I just started playing last year and I love it. I am also hoping to find time for Chinatown Wars soon, if only 40-hour handheld RPGs wouldn't keep landing on my desk.
Oh, and... Two Worlds? Really? Hey man, to each his own, but as a grammar nerd myself, bad translations make my head explode! Of course, improper grammar is the least of that game's problems...
"Real" is underrated. Congratulations on being out of school now! Oh, why would you be interested in finishing Two Worlds anyway? Just wondering. I tried it out at a friends' place and didn't care much for it.
Here's the problem with me (just roll with it, you'll understand the Two Worlds thing). I love games where I can dump points into stats. I also love games where every piece of armor/weaponry looks different. Both of these things happen in Two Worlds. There is also co-op. Co-op in the fantasy RPG genre is sorely underdone, outside of MMORPGs but that's not really co-op as there's very little story and more grinding/collection quests. And the German reviews for the PC version were really good. I know there's gotta be some nugget of goodness in there somewhere.
Or it could be that I bought the game when it came out and didn't wait for reviews. I need to get my $60 out of it...
