Is It Wrong To Hate Nintendo?

I feel dirty for saying it, but I fucking hate them.

by SoulScreme

Okay, so, like everybody else, I grew up on Nintendo.  I loved Mario and Samus and Link and all those guys.  But then again, back then there were way more games on their consoles.

I've come to a recent realization, I don't hate Microsoft.  I don't like some things they do, but I don't hate them and I definitely don't hate the 360.  The one I hate is Nintendo, I fucking hate them and I can't hold it back any longer.

The Wii sucks.  I'm sorry, but it sucks.  There is shit to play on there.  I mean, the only original thing for it is a free compilation disk of sport mini-games.  Zak and Wiki is kind of cool, or at least it would be in the motion controls worked properly.  Heck, that goes for almost eveyr third party game.  Nintendo must be hiding some secret deep inside of their corporate labyrinth to get the Wii mote to not feel retarded.

My option for "good" games are another Metroid just like the others but with Wii-mote, another Zelda just like the others but with Wii-mote, another Mario just like the others but with Wii-mote... did I make my point?  I like the idea of the Wii mote, I love the concept, but in reality it's a pain the ass and most games don't use it well. And was it really necessary to include almost no graphical power?  I mean, heck, just a little would have been nice.

The reason I hate Nintendo is that they have these wonderful ideas, they are terrific.  But, then they fuck it up by not having the mega-hit games I want to play.  I am 24 years old and am sick of Mario.  Zelda was better in 2-D and I was never huge into Metroid.  The only thing catering to me on Wii is the craptacular Manhunt 2.

But Nintendo made a choice to not have GTAIV, Assassin's Creed, etc.  How much fucking fun would Assassin's Creed be with a Wii-mote!  So, yeah, I hate Nintendo.  I'm a bit of a Sony fanboy, but that has nothing to do with it.  360 is okay in my book, I can respect it.  Wii is a bungled mess that everybody is attracted to for the wow factor, but the games just haven't shown up yet.  And as we've seen with the GameCube, you might be waiting quite a while for them.

So there, if you love Nintendo, oh well, I don't give a crap.  Go buy Resident Evil 4 for the 18th time.

Pardon the French, if you own a Wii then you might not know some of those words.

Half of your arguments make zero sense and the other half are grade A silly. First of all you say that one main reason is that the Wii doesn't have games. Your proof of this is saying that you don't count Mario Galaxy, Zelda, or Metroid because they are just the old games with new controls.

What is Halo 3 but Halo 2 with better graphics? What is GTA IV but GTA III with better graphics? I would say a complete revamp of the way a game is played is a bigger change then a complete revamp of what it looks like. A change here and a change there isn't the biggest thing in the world and seeing as I have a doubt that you have played much of Mario Galaxy it is hard for you to argue against it.

If you are obsessed with violence then yes, it makes sense that you are not a Wii fan. If you enjoy video games it really doesn't make much sense at all. The console is $250 dollars and the games are cheap as hell. It isn't like they are making an assault on your wallet - that is why it doesn't have insane graphical power. When developers give a shit games look fantastic (Mario Galaxy, Metroid) but the same can be said about any system.

The reason every third party developer is making crap is because they are lazy. Zach and Wiki is a fantastic title and shows what happens when people take their heads out of the sand and realize that graphics are not the be all end all - gameplay is.

Oh, and pardon the lack of blood splatter. If you believe half of what you said you might ADD half way through my comment.

Hello, I'm new to the site, I don't intend to step on other people's toes, but perhaps you could glance at my counter argument, located here:

#1- Twilight Princess was the best game to come out on any system in 2006. Hands down. No question. So that "there is shit to play" argument only holds so much water.

#2- That you are sick of Mario does not mean that Mario is a tired title.

#3- Nintendo has never attempted to go toe-to-toe with Microsoft, Sony, or any other developer. They have simply tried to make games that are fun for a broad spectrum of players. A lot of people refer to the Wii as a "niche" console, when, in fact, the opposite is true. 360 and PS3 appeal to "gamers", the Wii appeals to moms, dads, gamers, grandparents, kids, boyfriends, girlfriends, and everyone else.

no offense sean but you don't need the nintendo wii to play "the best game to come out on any system in 2006". the fact remains that even though TP was one of the, if not, best game of 2006, the wii version is nothing but a port of a GC game with, in my opinion, what feels like tacted on controls.

don't get me wrong, i love my wii but beyond wii sports, zelda, and elebits, i haven't touched my wii in ages.

Twilight Princess is on the GameCube. But my main issue is that I never see anything new out of Nintendo. Same characters, same games, done over and over. I also still don't see them courting third parties any better. If you're content to play the same games time and time again, fine. Personally, the Halo 3 argument is why I don't play Halo. I spend most of my time with new, creative titles like Heavenly Sword, MotorStorm, Everyday Shooter, The Darkness, etc. Sure, I like the old standbys like Guitar Hero 3 and Ratchet and Clank Future, but what I hate about Nintendo is their complacency. They are happy to stick to the old standbys for the most part. And that irks me. There was a time when their games were fresh and new. They seem to want to hold onto the innovations from that period forever. A new character, a new series, something, anything. I hate them because I used to love them. I just hate the lack of innovation in story telling.

wait... so you're against playing long running franchises because they appear to lack innovation and bring nothing new in terms of new gameplay experiences but you'll play new franchises that abuse the same 'overused' formula that the long running franchises have been using?

    i'm confused.

Matthew, remind me how Everyday Shooter is the same formula? What was the game you palyed that's exactly liek MotorStorm? A game with a plot line and narrative as involving as Heavenly Sword?

Frankly you being a sony fanboy does have something to do with what you say. I'm actually dumbfounded as to why you guys keep "drinking the kool-aid" trying to come up with ways to make sony sound like they know what they are doing. I have no preference whatsoever. I go with what suits me best as a gamer. With the last gen I was all about the ps2 in the beginning showing the most upside, but as soon as I started to get into online gaming I shifted to xbox because they had a more organized approach to it. For the current gen I own a 360 and a Wii and I'll admit that my wii has become secondary for the moment, but I'll take the pros and potential of the wii any day over anything that ps3 has to offer. With any system it's always going to take time to get things right on it software wise. What's sad is sony had the momentum and groundwork laid out for ps3 to "grab the baton" and run with it, but they dropped the ball big time with the decisions that they made and now they are trying to play catch up.

And consider this...you support a company whose console is based on an idea they stole during a botched partnership with Nintendo, the company that in a way gave life to the Playstation and its "innovations," and effectively resurrected the gaming industry when it hit its slump back in the 80's. It's no different than hating your parents, it would seem. Don't get me wrong, I do agree that Nintendo is currently out of ideas and is recycling, but again, that does not mean I condemn them for it. Creating games is a very long and hard process, so most developers will reach out for anything they can to help. On t hat note, also consider this: NOTHING is original.

And to clarify an earlier point: yes, Twilight Princess was a GameCube port, but it was the Wii version (with the innovative controls) that took multiple Game of the Year awards (1UP, EGM, X-play, et al...) Again, for the overwhelming majority of people buying and trying to buy the Wii, it isn't about pixel rates, originality of gameplay, or any of the things that matter to the hardcore crowd. It's about having fun while gaming, which (in my worthless opinion) has been swept under the rug as an aim in the next-gen era. Somehow photo-realism is more important than sheer joy.

Goddess of Wa--erm, Heavenly Sword was far from original, Generic Racing Gam--erm, Motorstorm was far from original, Geometry War--erm, Everyday Shooter was far from original. Your definition of originality is strikingly similar to the actual definition of mediocre. If the next generation is unbelievably short copypasta games then yes, I guess you are right.
