Spike's Video Game Awards Are A Joke
Seriously, this is a load of you know what.
by SoulScreme
Spike recently announced their nominees for their annual Video Game Awards. The list is a friggin' joke. Let's start with picking nominees. Hundreds of games are released every year. However, Spike thinks that there need only be 4 nominees for any one category. That's right, you only have 4 choices for game of the year.
Now let's focus on who got nominated for game of the year. Is that all but one XBox 360 exclusive games, it think it is! Halo 3, BioShock, Mass Effect and the Orange Box. So... wtf? Nothing cross platform? Nothing Sony or Nintendo exclusive? What about Super Mario Galaxy, Heavenly Sword, Uncharted? What about Assassin's Creed or Guitar Hero 3 or Rock Band? This is just fishy.
Well, here's why it's likely happening. The first award listed is sponsored by Mountaind Dew. Mountain Dew is in bed with Microsoft. I know that I'm entering the realm of conspiracy theory now, but I can't help it. I find it impossible to believe that NOTHING on Wii or PS3 was worthy of a game of the year nod.
Sure, all the games listed are great games. But you'd think they'd try to be a bit more fair. The real problem is that there should probably be more like 10 nominees, not 4.
I'd like to think that maybe we can boycott the awards this year and send a message to Spike. XBox 360 is a great console, but the entire list is far too dominated by it's games. There have been amazing games on every console this year and they deserve recognitions.

There's no conspiracy to it. Its not like the Oscars, Grammys or Nobel prizes here. This is more akin to the MTv Video Music Awards. The company that buys the most airtime will get the award.
However, I think it is important to not that not only are the Spike V.G. Awards a joke, the entire network is a joke. Try to remember that "Spike" used to be the Nashville Network, which was "rebranded" when their people decided that post-pubescent man-children was the most attractive demographic. This is a television network built on the principle of lowest common denominator. It would be hard to boycott something that no one is watching.
But Sean, people are watching. And plenty of gamers tune in once a year for these awards. Just because you don't watch it doesn't mean others don't.
Super Mario Galaxy, Uncharted and Assassin's Creed aren't out yet, so they can't be nominated. Heavenly Sword was good, but certainly not Game of the Year quality. The only PS3 title that should have even been considered is Resistance: Fall of Man, and honestly, it just isn't quite as good as any of the four nominees. I admit that the VGA's are usually a joke, but these nominations don't surprise or bother me a bit.
Oops. Missed the fact that Mass Effect isn't out yet. Shoots my argument all to hell.
Who cares what Spike thinks? In certain cases, apathy is deliverance for the sake of sanity. We make our own decisions & such awards shouldn't be a deciding factor for anyone anyways. Developers will be recognized by fans not media. We are the driving force of the gaming & hardware industries.
I checked out the full list and it's definitely garbage, but then again I wasn't planning on watching it anyway.
Yeah, they are a joke. No one has ever taken them seriously.
