Let’s start out by saying that I am not a massive fan of beat ‘em ups in pretty much any form – the last game of this genre I had anything to do with was a decade long love affair with Tekken III spurred on by my ineptitude at it and the equal ineptitude of my next door neighbour - which kept us at a ten year long stale mate which we found rather entertaining when drunk.

Deadliest Warrior is not Tekken III – things have changed since the PS1, in my opinion where beat ‘em ups are concerned not always for the better. I miss the Mortal Kombat over the top gore!

Enter Deadliest Warrior with bucket tons of blood being shipped in from every time period where man cleaved other man in twain…

The game itself a pretty solid Xbox Live Arcade title – born of a fairly solid second fighting game engine. One tried and tested by the developer Pipeworks. There are a decent number of characters (many of you who have lulled at the show will recognise the cast) including Viking, Spartan, Ninja and of course… Pirate. Each character has a choice of three default weapons which are hot swappable during combat; with further weapon upgrades awarded for game progress in the single player mode. The weapons do their job; short, medium and projectile architypes are well executed and varied. The most important factor is more simple than entertaining and fluid game mechanics – it’s fun.
