8-Bit Gary Costume Is Made Of Many Bits

8-Bit Is The New Vintage After All

Ironically, Mike and Sean were just discussing some of the past Halloween costumes that they made and were proud of while I began browsing Kiel Johnson's of Hyperbole Studios gallery of the 8-Bit Gary costume he made and used in an upcoming Toshiba commercial. Considering some of the Toshiba commercials I've seen in the past, this one has some seriously awesome potential. And while I'd like to give the GV boys an "A" for effort for their costuming endeavors, they've got absolutely nothing on this blocky guy.

For all of you crafty people looking to go 8-bit, you're in luck. Kiel's production still gallery may not really be a tutorial, but it provides a lot of insight as to how to carry out a big process like the construction of 8-Bit Gary (as seen above standing next to the real-bit Gary). I must admit, despite the use of the term "costume", I couldn't fully comprehend that there was a living person in there until I actually saw her getting boxed in. That's right, she's a lady!

Here we see the cardboard suit structure that was built for/on Klai Brown to glue the "pixels" onto. And the poor thing looks pretty uncomfortable, so if you're building along at home, keep in mind this isn't really dance party material. The pixels were cut into cubes from a high-density foam and then spray painted before being attached. About 4,000 cubes/pixels were cut in total though not all of them were used for Gary. There happens to be two other costumes in the making as well. Yay!

Aw, when's she's not boxed up in her costume, she's building it.

To get the full idea of how tedious of a process to build Gary was, you have to visit Kiel's photo gallery for yourself. And though I can't even imagine the countless hours that went into all of this, I'm sure all of that hard work paid off the minute she stepped out in front of the camera. Im sure the oilly guy was pretty rewarding too, at least to someone. Though I must say, he totally through my suspicions of this being a Dire Straits video remake.
