"Snackable Content" Coming to PSP

Nom Nom Nom

by Veggie Jackson

By offering almost endless amounts of apps, Apple has done a good job of imitating a handheld game console with their iPhone.  Now, it seems that we’ve come full circle, and a handheld game console is going to do its best impression of the iPhone.  Today, Sony’s Zeno Colaço revealed to Develop that the PSP will be home to a new “specifically-branded separate area” of the PlayStation Network that will offer "snackable content" akin to the iPhone’s App Store.

Zeno also stated that over 50 studios are working on "new kinds of games and applications" for the service, including Subatomic Studios, developers of the iPhone hit, Fieldrunners, who are bringing their desktop tower defense game to the new service.

The lines between handheld consoles and PDAs are starting to blur more and more, and this is just another example of that.  I wouldn’t be shocked if a DS or a PSP with cell phone capabilities is launched in the next year or so (no, not like that), and we may see further gaming functionality from new smart phones in that time, as well.
