A Boy and His Blob Coming to Wii

The Return of Blobert

by Veggie Jackson

Apparently, I'm old.

That's what NintedoPower.com is telling me, anyway.  Promoting the upcoming April issue of the long-running magazine, the site asks the question, "Remember A Boy and his Blob on NES?"  Then, before I even get a chance to gleefully scream "YES!," they come back with, "Then you're old! But this reinvention of the property on Wii is simply stunning."  Okay, so I'm old, but hey, there's a new A Boy and His Blob game coming, so what do I care?

According to the sneak peek at the article covering the upcoming game, the new version of A Boy and His Blob will have a lot in common with its 18-year-old predecessor; you'll still feed jelly beans to your blob in order to transform him into different tools, and items that help the titular boy reach new areas and overcome obstacles, and our overarching goal is still the liberation of Blobolonia, the home world of your blob.  New to the series will be, of course, entirely new visuals, and the ability to use your blob offensively.  A is for "Apricot," but it's also for an "Anvil" that you can drop on enemies' heads.

The article announces an Autumn 2009 release, and also goes on to speak with the developers, WayForward, but you'll have to wait for the magazine to read it.

Awesome! A Boy and His Blob was a great puzzle(-ish) game.

In this picture it looks as though they're both pissing off of a cliff.

YAY!!! A Boy and His Blob was great back in the day, but terribly difficult and annoying by today's standards. Still, was a cool game and I'd like to see what an update can do.

I love the art style from that Nintendo Power scan. It looks hand drawn, like a less stylish Braid. I'm curious if this is a full blown release or a WiiWare title.

Am I the only moron who couldn't ever figure out how to play this game?! Didn't it have to do with feeding him jelly beans or something? So frustrating!

Nah, you needed a Masters in Jellybeanology to beat the original.

Holy crap, I remember this game! I never got past the first level, honestly, but my mom played it constantly. This and Tetris.

How come when I look at that picture, the Brokeback Mountain music starts to play in my head?

David Crane sure loved programming things that hopped up and down slowly in place or a predictable arch.

@ Lisa: I played through (some of) this game again recently, and no, it's not you. There are no instructions in-game whatsoever, you're pretty much left to your own devices and have a limited supply of jelly beans with which to accomplish your mission--whatever that may be. (Getting the Blob back to Blobolonia and saving the planet).

It's possible that all of the relevant information was in the instruction book, which I don't have, I only have the cartridge. As is, though, the game is insultingly hard.

Haha thank god, Sarah -- every few years I would try the game again thinking that, as I age and gather more experience in life, I'd figure out what the point was.. not true.

I thought I was nuts, though I'm willing to try the new one (if instructions are provided, or maybe a backstory about what the hell we have to do)!
