*UPDATED* Batman: Arkham Asylum GotY in 3D...in Europe

This Better Come to America...Seriously

by Veggie Jackson

If you’re anything like me, and you bought Batman: Arkham Asylum, you probably still have the game.  With six DLC maps, some of the best stealth action ever, and a fighting system that never gets boring, it has surprisingly high replay value, and the fact that it’s Batman makes it almost trade-in-proof.  After hearing today’s news from CVG, though, it looks like I’ll be moving to Belgium, dropping my copy off at whatever passes for a game store there, and upgrading to the Game of the Year edition when it comes out on March 26.  The only thing better than 2D Batman is 3D Batman.

CVG is reporting that in addition to the six downloadable maps, the European release of the GotY edition will also come bundled with a pair of TriOviz 3D glasses.  The TriOviz system displays 3D visuals on SD and HD TVs without using red and blue lenses, creating a simulated 3D effect without sacrificing the game’s original colors.  Or, as Square-Enix Europe puts it, "By leveraging the depth-of-field while maintaining the original gameplay and colour integrity, TriOviz 3D creates a far more immersive gaming experience, allowing console players to dive deeper into the gothic world of Arkham Asylum.”  Blah blah blah, just bring it to America, where Batman lives.

I’m absolutely intrigued by the concept of 3D gaming, but I’m not ready to sink a ton of money into a 3D TV, especially considering how much improvement they are likely to see in the next few years.  If the TriOviz system can produce high-quality 3D images, it should make a nice holdover until 3D sets become more affordable.

*UPDATE* - Apparently, America has really pissed off Square-Enix, because the Game of the Year edition, 3D glasses and all, will only be coming to Europe, Australia, and Asia.  It makes sense, I guess; no one in America likes Batman, right?  This sucks.

I'm not convinced that 3D on a non-3D set is anything to get excited over.
