Captain America: Super Soldier Trailer Actually Looks Good
Or Am I Just a Sucker?
Earlier this week, Sega announced that Captain America: Super Soldier, a 3rd person action-adventure based on the upcoming Captain America movie, would be coming next year. There was much worry. Sega's track record with Marvel movie game tie-ins has been dismal so far, with two poorly received Iron Man games, so confidence in the Captain America project isn't exactly high. The first trailer for the game, however, actually shows some promise.
Featuring Cap’s hand-to-hand fighting, shield throwing, and acrobatic platforming skills, the video shows a game that, believe it or not, looks pretty solid. The character models look very nice, and our hero’s combat and parkour abilities seem smooth, in a Prince of Persia kind of way. Even more intriguing is Cap’s ability to bounce his shield from enemy to enemy, just the way he does in the comics.
Is it possible that this game, brought to us by the publisher of both Iron Man debacles and the developer of Spider-Man: Friend or Foe, might actually be good? Stranger things have happened, I suppose, and while I’m still cautious about the game’s chances, I’m also, dare I say it, optimistic. Of all the characters in the massive Marvel Universe, Captain America has always been my favorite, so even a passable game starring the Star Spangled Avenger would be enough to make me geek out, and now it looks like we may get at least that. It’s early, though, so I'm certainly not ready to call this one a winner yet, but at least it doesn' look like a total failure. Of course, I've been fooled before.

Christos Gage is writing it, so that'll be a least a see-look.
I want this to be good - Captain America is awesome - but it won't be. Prove me wrong, Next Level - I like you guys (you did do Mario Strikers and Punch Out, after all), but lets look at your track record. Most of your games are horrible, especially the licensed ones. Spiderman: Friend or Foe, Cybertron Adventures and Ghost Recon for Wii? Not to mention, SEGA's Marvel Games are usually made in only 8 months, a year at best. Not exactly the recipe for a stellar title.
Still, you guys clearly have more talent than the dudes they brought in to do Iron Man. There's hope this could turn into a fun rental. There looks to be some solid, fun core mechanics in place - platforming, the rebounding shield, etc. Good luck guys. I'm just saying, I'm not getting my hopes up, and I won't be disappointed if Captain America sucks.
