The latest issue of Game Informer includes a feature on an upcoming superhero MMORPG called Champions Online.  The project is being handled by Cryptic Studios, the creators of the relatively successful City of Heroes/City of Villains MMO and the recently canceled Marvel Universe Online.  It’s a bit strange that Cryptic would be developing a game that will compete directly with their bread and butter franchise, CoH, but at least we know that the right people are working on it.

 

 

With this information coming so soon after the Marvel cancellation news, one has to wonder if Champions will be like a phoenix, rising from the ashes of the now-dead project, or if it will be a completely original game.  I’m also intrigued by the possibility that it will be based on the old Champions role playing game.  Either way, it’s good to see that console owners won’t be left completely out of the superhero MMO loop.
