Early PS4 Specs Sent To Developers

How Close Is The Next Generation?

by Veggie Jackson

It seems like we’ve been talking about the next generation of game consoles since the start of this console generation.  Gamers have always been less about “what’s out,” and more concerned with “what’s next” when it comes to technology.  Apparently, Sony shares some of that sentiment, as they have apparently sent specifications for the PlayStation 4 architecture to developers.  These are obviously very early designs, and may not reflect the final product at all, but it’s interesting, and a bit surprising, to see Sony already starting to move forward into “Generation 8.”

The info comes from a Japanese site called Impress, and the Japanese to English translation is a bit tough to decipher, but here’s the details we’ve gathered so far:

-    Sony very much wishes to beat Microsoft and Nintendo to the punch, and launch the PS4 in 2011.
-    The PS4 will continue using the CELL processor.  This will help developers by not needing them to essentially “reinvent the wheel” when developing for the system.
-    The new system is expected to be approximately twice as powerful as the PS3.  Instead of trying to blow everyone out of the water with horsepower, Sony will adopt a version of Nintendo’s model for the Wii; make it cheaper, sell it cheaper.

Remember, this is an extremely early mock-up of the system’s hardware, and a speculative one at that, and the info is coming from a badly translated article that includes the phrase “SCE, the current generation of game consoles, the need is great tough,” so don’t put too much stock in the info just yet.  If these initiatives are real, though, Sony seems to have done a pretty good job of assessing the issues that have kept the PS3 in third place during this current console cycle.  It will be very interesting to see what all of the big three console makers have in store for us a few years down the road, and this is the first peek, even if it is just an artist’s conception.

    10 year cycle everyone..

Also, how will it be twice as powerful as the PS3 but made cheaper and sold cheaper? Curious as to how they would pull that off.

As much as I enjoy the PS3 and want to see more love for it, I feel like they need to focus on the next generation and pull a Microsoft. Beat everyone to the next gen and get exclusives back. Just make sure they don't red-ring.

If THIS could be cheaper, then the PS3 should be cheaper.

i dont see any reason for them to need to beat anyone to the market. I believe they keep pushing the 10-year cycle, improve production cost thus lowering the cost of the current system and give your customers that stability and longevity that they have received with the PS2. I think instead of thinking of a new console, they should put that time, money and energy into making the PS3 better, getting exclusives back on the PS3, though I am not sure how being first on the market would achieve getting exclusives back unless development cost went down with the new system, but if the new system is twice as powerful as the PS3, is development cost going to get better or worse?

This picture can't be recent. It has the button toggle the analog sticks on or off, which has been removed form the PS3 controller. Why add it back? And as previously stated: What about their 10-year plan?

Oh, so it's confirmed. I thought your usage of "believe" meant you weren't sure. I'll give up on commenting tonight. Having a cold is bad enough, I don't think that shot of whiskey helped my mental capabilities much...

Argh! I feel like Charlie Brown when he misses the football because some bitch decided to remove the ball from his intended action. Oh, well. Just another thing on the list to buy in the coming years. Oh, yeah, Voyou San is right. This is an old mock of the PSX system that was on it's way, then not. Huge hard drive, TiVo stuffs, all sorts of goodies. Maybe that's what they have planned for this time around. I guess we'll see.
